The plain answer
What Does MILF Mean? Meaning, Origin and Use
A slang word with a short history and plenty of opinions, and what the dictionaries make of it.
MILF is slang, an acronym for a crude phrase about attractive mothers. Dictionary.com describes an attractive older woman, usually a mother, and first records the word between 1990 and 1995. Its definitions describe how a woman is seen, and Wikipedia reports that some media outlets found it offensive to women, so use it with care.
Three ideas packed into one word
Dictionary.com labels it slang and carries two entries, one American and one British, that do not quite match.
- Attractive
- Both entries start here. The American one adds that she is "regarded as a sexual object", a phrase that matters when we reach the criticism below.
- Older
- The American entry says older. The British entry, credited to the 2012 Collins English Dictionary, says middle-aged. Neither puts a number on it.
- A mother
- The American entry says usually. The British entry never mentions children, so even the dictionary does not treat motherhood as a must.
Where did the word come from?
It was in student slang by 1992, and a film did the rest.
- 1990 to 1995first recorded, says Dictionary.com
- 1992one of nine terms for attractive women collected from Berkeley students, says Wikipedia
- 1999American Pie makes it widely known, says Wikipedia
- 2007a New York magazine article treats it as mainstream, as Wikipedia quotes
Wikipedia reports that American Pie's screenwriter, Adam Herz, said he did not invent the phrase. By 2007 that magazine article found the word on mugs, T-shirts, books and television shows, and in a genre of adult entertainment.
MILF or cougar: what is the difference?
MILF
Describes how a woman is seen: attractive, older, usually a mother. Neither Dictionary.com entry mentions a younger partner.
Cougar
Describes what a woman does. Cambridge, Oxford Learner's and Dictionary.com all link it to an older woman and younger men: Cambridge says she has them, the others that she seeks them.
Oxford Learner's labels cougar informal and often offensive. A note from Vocabulary.com on Dictionary.com's cougar page says even a compliment can offend ("best to avoid"), though Wikipedia reports a growing effort to reclaim the word.
Why do some people find it objectifying?
Wikipedia says some media outlets found the word offensive to women, and mentions one suggested replacement: WHIP, coined by Bibi Lynch, for "women who are hot, intelligent and in their prime".
An academic paper goes further. In the journal Atlantis in 2014, May Friedman argued that the MILF figure ends up objectifying women and reinforcing narrow ideas of motherhood, and called the term "deeply raced and classed". Her examples were three white middle-class mothers from popular culture.
Using the word well
Whether a label feels like a compliment is the other person's call. On HookUps365 you describe yourself and what you want in your own words, as the features page shows, so the word belongs to whoever uses it about themselves. The main site explains what hookup means too.
A note on respect: lead with her username, or the name she gives you, and what she wrote, not a label, and don't guess her age or whether she has children. Even the dictionaries disagree. Next stop: how to hook up with a MILF or MILF hookups near me.
MILF meaning: your questions
What is a MILF, and what does it stand for?
Dictionary.com defines a MILF as an attractive older woman, usually a mother, and marks the word slang. The letters shorten a crude phrase about attractive mothers that this page does not need to spell out.
How old is a MILF?
Dictionary.com's entries give no number: the American one says older, the British one middle-aged. The word has no fixed age, so a profile tells you more than a label does. Read the person, not the word.
Does a MILF have to be a mother?
Not on Dictionary.com's reading. Its American entry says usually a mother, while its British entry mentions no children. Wikipedia's gloss sits close to the American entry: an older woman, typically one with children, considered sexually attractive. Ask rather than assume.
Is a MILF the same as a cougar?
No. MILF describes how an older woman is seen, usually as a mother. Cougar describes an older woman tied to much younger men, and Oxford Learner's labels it often offensive. The comparison above sets the definitions side by side.
